How to open a PST file without Outlook

A .pst is not a document. Windows will not open it with a double-click if Outlook is missing.

What a PST is

Outlook stores mail, calendar and contacts in a .pst (Personal Storage Table). You get one when you export a mailbox, take a backup, or inherit a disk from a former workstation.

Why Outlook is the wrong default

Many IT, audit or spare PCs have no Office. Mounting a PST in Outlook also writes to the file. If you only need to read and search, a read-only viewer is safer.

With BuscaPST

  1. Install BuscaPST from the Microsoft Store (Windows 10/11).
  2. In the wizard, pick the folder that holds the .pst files — local disk, USB or NAS.
  3. Wait for indexing. Then search by text, sender (from:), date (date:) or attachments (has:attachments).
  4. Preview shows the message. CSV/EML export and attachment download are Pro (29.90 EUR, one-time).

Fictional data: the screenshot uses invented names and addresses; not real people or companies.

What it does not do (yet)

It does not repair corrupt PST files, does not read modern Outlook OST files, and is not a forensic suite. It is built to find an email in a backup, locally, without Outlook.
